"Leaks... use only for dry climates" 2009-08-23
By Public Health Professional
The weekend before we were to leave on a longer camping trip far away from home, the zipper on the door of our 10-year old Eddie Bauer Dome Tent broke. In a hurry to find a family tent before our trip, we searched Amazon. We found this tent, with many features which sounded very good, and ordered it even though there were not many reviews and they were mixed. This was probably our first mistake.

Amazon got the tent to us a day ahead of schedule... so we were able to put it up in the yard to get familiar with the tent---knowing that we might find ourselves in the position of putting it up in the dark on the first night of camping. It was fairly easy to put up. It has lots of nice features such as a screened in porch. It was large and could be made into two rooms---we liked that option. It was airy and well-ventilated with lots of large windows around each side. We left it out overnight because it was going to rain and I wanted to see how the tent would do. It did rain but not very hard.

In the morning, I noticed a few drops of water in the middle of the tent (no big deal I thought). I also found a lot more water under the back windows where some pouches were sown into the bottom of the window. I figured I could put seam sealer on the stitching and prevent that from happening. So, again I was not worried. Since we were leaving the next day, I decided not to put the seam sealer on then as it needs 24 hours to dry and we had to pack up the tent for the trip.

As expected, we arrived at our campsite as it was getting dark the next day after a long day's drive. It had rained as we arrived but the rain was stopping. We were able to get the tent up quickly. It was warm, so we opened all the windows and left the doors open with the porch screen alone to keep the bugs out. It did not rain again that night. When we awoke, we were very happy with the tent. There were six of us and there was room for at least two more persons in the tent. The ventilation was great. We were dry and extremely comfortable. I really like the ability to keep the doors open at night because of the screen porch attached (on non-rainy nights). I congratulated myself on a great pick of tents.

The next day we were away from the campsite most of the day. Before I left, I put seam sealer on the stitching at the bottom of the back windows. On our return to the campsite it started raining hard. When we got to the campsite (it was still raining hard), we found our tent full of water and half of our sleeping bags wet. We set the sleeping bags a dry side and cleaned up the water with some towels. We noticed that most of the rain was coming through the rain tarp... not through the seams but through the tarp fabric. We also had lots of water coming through the back window seams at the bottom where the carry pouches were stitched. This is where I had recently put seam sealer on. There was a white tag that seemed to be collecting a lot of water and conducting the water into the tent. But most of the water was coming in through the middle top through the rain fly. After awhile, the rain stopped and we set out our pads and sleeping bags. It was not cold and the wet sleeping bags were tolerable. It was not as warm that night and we kept the doors closed. In addition, the rain fly over the porch, collected water and had to be dumped several times.

The next day, we were back at the campsite to cook dinner and sit around the fire. As it was getting late, the rain came again. Again the water came in through the top of the tent through the rain fly. We moved the sleeping bags and put a poncho down in the middle of the tent to catch water. [We did not have a large tarp to put over the tent]. We sat around the edges of the tent waiting for the rain to stop. The seams at the back windows did not leak as much, presumably because the seam sealer had more time to dry and to work. The white tag continued to conduct water into the inside of the tent from where it was stitched to the bottom of one of the back windows. After the rain stopped, we wiped up the water and were able to sleep.

We spent the rest of the trip in cabin. We are now in the process of returning the tent. Amazon makes it very easy. So I recommend buying from Amazon... but paying close attention to the reviews.

I would not buy this tent unless I camped where it doesn't rain.

 "Love this tent!" 2009-07-28
By khernandez (Texas, USA)
We took this tent out for a few days in Texas and since there was no rain in the forecast, we did not use the fly. I sealed the seams of the tent with Coleman sealer I purchased from Walmart just in case it rains next time. I will buy a tarp to put on the ground next time because a stick poking up out of the ground poked a small hole in the floor. My only other complaint is the that screen snagged on something (don't know if it came that way from the factory or if it happened while we were setting up the tent and just never noticed). The inside of the tent is huge. We had a kingsize air mattress, a twin and a dogbed and there was still plenty of room to walk around. My husband is 6 ft and could stand up comfortably inside. I would have liked the screen room to be a little deeper, but there was still enough room to set up two round camping chairs and walk between them to access the door. The screen room provides an extra barrier for bugs, so almost no insects made it in to the main part of the tent. Overall, I loved it. I'll have to wait to see how it performs in rainy conditions.

"Great Tent, Great Family Fun, HUGE !" 2009-06-29
By Deb (Jerzy shore)
I was worried about buying this tent after reading the other review - but I didn't have any problems, and I haven't even waterproofed the fly yet (this is recommended to do - so I'll do it soon) ! We set it up Friday night - my 12 yo daughter and I - with little problems. Took about 30 minutes - I don't expect it will take that long next time. I did stop at Ace Hardware and bought a tarp before we started. I bought an oversize tarp - and the extra length was perfect under the screened-room as a floor. We were able to set up a Eddie Bauer cot (big enough for me and one child to sleep on), a queen size blow up bed, and two full size blow up beds - PLUS still had enough room to squeeze by eachother without stepping on the beds. We ran a cord and watched DVDs each night - left everything in the tent all weekend - and even through 2 rainstorms, nothing got wet. I was worried last night - the rain really started coming down, and the wind picked up - but the fly stayed in place - and I hadn't even tied it to the stakes, just wrapped it around a few times before I pushed them down into the ground.

We will be buying another one of these to take with us overseas so as to have it available when we travel. I can see lots of fun family vacations in this - easily will fit my family of 6 and our stuff !

UPDATED - a month later - still haven't gotten around to waterproofing the fly - but it still hasn't leaked ! We've gone camping multiple times - and it's great. We've worked it down to 2 queen size beds as my dh doesn't really care for the camping experience, so the kids and I put 2 queen beds in end to end all the way across the tent - and there is plenty of room for everything. The bag that the tent comes in can be used as a storage "closet" - great for leaving rolls of toilet paper, flashlight, and car keys in so there's no searching for them when you need them most. We've been inside during a storm - no problems - just need to make sure the windows are closed, and the beds aren't pushed right up against the sides. Still using the oversize tarp on the bottom - but here's the cool thing - you can set the tent up - but not secure it to the ground, in case you don't get it on the tarp completely straight (I like having the extra tarp under the screen room - if you see the picture - the entire tent itself has a floor, but the screen room opens directly to the ground, so with the extra large tarp underneath, the tent stays off the ground (great if it rains) and there is a floor for the screen room). We're going to the PA mountains next month. Have I mentioned how much my kids have grown to love the great outdoors?

 "Leaks horribly" 2009-06-25
By Northstar (Michigan)
I'm very disappointed in this tent. I liked the looks and size of it. However, I did a test set up and that night and next day had a soft gentle rain. The tent flooded out. The entire floor was flooded with large puddles of water. I actually had to bail out the water. The outside of the tent ended up with water stains. The rain fly cords came loose. There was no wind. It just could not hold up against water. The screen room actually tore when I got it caught on a stake. I returned it to the place I bought it and was basically told that I shouldn't have left it in the rain, under the trees, and on the grass. Go figure. Don't buy it, waste of money. The water leaks will damage all of your items and leave you soaked.
