Just received this and set it up, Set-up was easy as could be, didn't even need the directions. Only gripe I would have is that assembly poles are much thinner than a previous Wenzel that we currently own. None the less, I hope this own lasts as long as the other one (15+ years) On a completely different note: I used a seam sealer with the applicator tip (wow, that was lame) after getting most of it on the floor I decided to use a fuzzy yellow flat trim disposable brush (1 inch wide) Let me tell ya, that worked like a champ and gave a nice thick even seal all around. In addition, I used scotchgard for fabric on the outside to add that extra protection (BTW, go to [...] and get a $1 off coupon) then go to big lots (of all places) and get the stuff for $3 a can!!!! That's a deal! Happy Trails Y'all!

This tent worked pretty well on a few rainy motorcycle trips. Packs up small enough to roll inside of my foam bed mat. Easy to set up. Did not leak during moderate rainstorms after coating entire tent with water-proofing spray. Remeber how much you're paying for this and I think you'll be fine. It's a lightweight 3 person tent wellsuited for light camping needs. Great for backyard or cub scout type camping, maybe not what you want for a week in the woods. Happy with mine even though one of the poles just split. I'll patch it and keep it till it drops and then probably buy another one. If you want a better tent, you should probably spend more money.

I picked this up for my 10 year old son as his first tent. We took it on a scout camp out this weekend and got to try it out. This tent was easy enough to put up in the rain, though due to the design, the poles require some effort to put through the sleeves. The fly went on in a heartbeat. I was surprised it has taped seams instead of a bathtub floor, but I put a tarp under it and even though we pitched it on wet muddy ground and had some light rain we stayed very dry. The temperature dropped unexpectedly overnight, and I was nicely surprised by how much warmer it was in the tent than outdoors when I opened up the tent to go. We had a heavy hard frost on the outside of the tent, some condensation inside. This tent also took the wind very well, even though the wind took down two other tents near us. Without the fly the ventilation looks good for a hot summer night, with it I think there is very good rain / wind protection. The fly allows for flexible ventilation, as needed, for in-between weather. Lots of pockets to store stuff inside, and plenty of room in the vestibule for boots, etc. True, it is heavy for backpacking, but we plan to use it as a big kid car camping tent. With two people and minimal gear (winter coats, two small backpacks) we were nice and cozy.

I slept in this tent for several days up in the Appalachian Mountains. It was very comfortable and I had no problems with staying dry either from condensation in the morning or from the one day it rained. It was easy to put together, has nice ventilation options and convenient storage pockets etc. I slept in it by myself and had plenty of room. I think it would be a little crowded with two people, but since there are two doors it would definitely be possible. You wouldn't have to crawl over you camping buddy to get out and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

I've used this tent twice so far. The first was a hot night. It provided great ventilation. The second was a very, very, very wet night and I was the only one to remain dry. I did seal the seams and sprayed it with water repellant beforehand. The only problem I had was a little water seeping through the floor, but it was barely enough to mention. It was pretty roomy-I fit myself and all my gear and I'm a pretty big guy. I feel it was a really good buy and was cheaper buying through Amazon than anywhere else I could find it.

We've had our Eureka Timberline tent for about 6 years now, and it's still in good shape. It's easy to set up, and it generally keeps the water out. On very stormy/rainy trips, the inside has gotten slightly damp at the edges, but we were dry on our sleeping pads and in our sleeping bags (and our friends got soaked). The tent is also fairly light, but we haven't really gone backpacking with it. We do mostly car camping, though we did take it on one hike-in camping trip.

I use this for remote camping in the Rocky Mountains and it holds up really well. It stands up to the wind and does a pretty good job of keeping heat in on the cold nights. This tent is very small and can barely accommodate 2 people - and only if they don't plan on keeping any gear in the tent. Don't even think about setting up a cot in here either.

This is my third Timberline tent in about 20 years. Eureka once made these in an Outfitter model that was truly a GREAT tent. It had a heavy duty floor and stress points were re-enforced. You had to seam seal them but they were really tuff. Now they do not make that tent but a cheaper model. It has a flimsy floor bit it is factory seam sealed. Of course the tent desighn is still the same. It is a great desighn that for all but heavy snow conditions in my opinion is the best desighn of any tent. You can leave the fly attached all the time and still set it up. In rain you can open the front and back and unlessit is a blowing gale stay dry and get plenty of air. The footprint is small meaning less groundto clear. This tent now days is okay for the occasional camper, but I sure miss the outfitter model.

Used this within a few days after receiving it. It rained for over 26 hours-constantly (sometimes heavy thunderstorms)and NOT one leak! I did use seam-sealer on the floor exterior seam and all exterior seams on the tent and fly prior to using it (as many experts do recommend doing every few years with any tent). The tent has a LOT of room for one person and gear and plenty for two people with gear. From what I have read and researched the "Outfitter" has thicker material and flooring vs. other Timberline tents and I am VERY glad I paid the extra money for this one. Believe me, I AM TOTALLY SOLD ON THIS TENT!! I have three tents now but will use this one primarly for solo backpacking. It is very well made, light-weight, secure and I KNOW now it's water-tight. It is VERY easy and quick to put up- anyone can do it in a super-fast manner! I quickly (and involuntarily) tested it with buckets of rain coming down on it. Can not recommend it enough. Get it!!

I am very pleased with the Eureka tent and am looking forward to using it during our October foliage season. We purchased a 3 season tent last year to do some fall camping in western Massachusetts, but there was so much mesh siding in the tent that the outside air temperature was the same inside the tent. Even though we were using down bags, we were miserable when the night temps dropped to the 30's. I have camped extensively in Colorado in the same temps (or lower) and not been uncomfortably cold in tents such as the Eureka that allow the mesh openings to be zippered shut. Four season 4-person tents from REI or EMS were priced about $200 more than the Eureka--much more than I wanted to pay to occasionally go car camping on a weekend. The Eureka is quick & simple to put up, and one person can do this. I watched my camping companions struggling to bend the poles just right to put up their dome tent--a two person project. The others had a tent (high end brand) that was like assembling an erector set. We were done setting up our Eureka in just a few minutes and didn't have to struggle to do it. We chose the option of having the more heavy duty floor and zippers and have not had any problems.

There are many reviews on the long-lived Timberline series and the Outfitter model features. The toughness, durability, reliability, and weather resistance of the tent is well established, so the question is why choose the a-frame Timberline instead of one of the alternatives? The 3 and 4-man alternatives I looked at were: inexpensive tents (under $150), high-quality ultralight tents (Bibler, Black Diamond, and Eureka for example), outfitter-class dome tents (Eureka Assault Outfitter), large recreation tents (Copper Canyon and Cougar Flats) and walled tents. Each tent has fitness for a different purpose, and my purpose was to suit my family of four with two adults and two toddlers for public campground car camping, wilderness car camping, and short backpacking. Here's what I looked at:



For the part-time outdoor travel life, tents are much less expensive than motorhomes, RV's, trailers, and slide-ins. They also take much less land to store when they're not being used and I have a scarce amount of land. Comparatively, I would consider a $1000 tent a bargain, but nobody wants to pay for something they won't use or benefit from, especially if it's actually counter to their criteria (too heavy or too fragile for example). I ruled out walled tents and hardcore mountain tents (Bombshelter) because the cost was so high for something I didn't need and wouldn't use.



Rec tents (Copper Canyon, Cougar Flats) are also fairly expensive, but at least under $500. They're big and comfortable (near vertical walls and standing room), but they're not as tough or durable as Outfitter class tents (Pine Lodge maybe but then you're getting into bigger bucks). Rec tents are also not as weather proof. They're heavy (sometimes as much as 40 lbs) which makes them impractical to backpack with (I would need a two-tent plan). Ultimately, I decided against them because despite their comfort, I see a tent as a necessary evil. I would much rather do without a tent, but when you need one, you need one. No matter how enjoyable a tent is, it's still a tent and I would rather be outside.



Inexpensive tents might seem to fit the bill because I certainly don't want to lavish money on something where I just crawl in and fall asleep. The problem with cheap tents is they fail when you need them most, and they need to be replaced over and over again making the economy false. I expect frequent camping for many years and an Outfitter will outlast a cheap tent more than the price multiple. I need a tent most when it's windy and percipitous and that's when the cheap ones fail. For me, they're no bargain.



I am formerly a hardcore backpacker, and trekker. I also mountaineered in North America. I was an Alpine-style minimalist. Tents were nonsense. I would use at most a bivy sack in the snow or on a glacier or in a rainstorm. I still carried a lot of weight because I needed a lot of food calories for many days. Nevertheless, a man's got to know his limitations. If I had to carry a wife and two toddlers, not even a mosquito net would be light enough. However, within their range, a 10 pound tent is cake.



For my criteria, the other tent I really like is the Eureka Assault Outfitter. It's basically a dome version of the Timberline Outfitter, but it's about $100 and 3 pounds more. Undoubtably it's roomier (as is the Timberline Outfitter 6) but the Timberline Outfitter 4 meets all my needs.



One shortcoming of this tent is that the fly is not freestanding -- it must be guyed out to stakes or it will fall against the tent wall. This is not normally a problem but in deep snow or on solid granite you would have to get creative. The instructions suggest burying gear, using ski poles etc. I believe dome type tents (Assault Outfitter) with pole pockets or clips will hold the fly away from the wall without stakes and guy outs. If I was planning a lot of snow camping, this is not the best tent as the broad walls are also not the best for heavy snow loads. I am sure it would readily suffice for occasional snow use, even deep snow.



Another note is that cord is not included to guy out the tent walls when not using the fly. The fly clips to rings on the wall sides and bungee cords fixed to the fly are pulled out guy the tent to stakes. Without the fly, there's nothing to guy out the sides. The solution is to add your own guy lines. I used bungee balls. Additional guy lines and stakes, possibly heavier ones (if you're not backpacking) will improve the tent. I don't mark it down for not including these because it's an easy thing to solve. The fact that the tent/fly requires stakes to complete the pitching is however, in my opinion, a real shortcoming.



It's a no-frills tent that does what a tent needs to do real well and nothing else -- because ultimately I'm not out there to dwell in a tent.

 "Suprisingly disappointed" 2009-08-30

I have owned an 8 x 8 tent made by Eureka (Gander Mountain label) for about 8 years and it is an excellent tent. I also own a 7 x 8 tent made by Kelty which is also and excellent tent. I take great care of my tents as well. I bought this tent with great excitement, for two reasons: It was designed more like my Kelty tent, which I love, and because it had the Eureka name, which is considered to be a great name in tents.



After unboxing the tent, I set it up in no time at all. This tent sets up VERY EASY, just like my Kelty. After getting it set up and taking a closer look at the seams, etc., I discovered that there were about 2 inches of missing stitches along one of the seams. I accepted this as merely a mass-production flaw and I stitched it up. I REALLY wanted to keep this tent. The next day, I began examing the surface of the tent fabric a bit more and discovered a couple small holes that were obviously original holes (smooth edges). At this point I was becoming skeptical of whether this tent was REALLY any better than the cheap tents you can get at Walmart. I tried to ignore these flaws, becaust at this point, I still really wanted to keep this tent because of it's ease of set-up and it's great ventilation.



The next week I took this tent on our annual Canadian adventure into northern Ontario, to be used for interior kayak camping. It set up easily, It held up good in the rain, but not great, and everything went fairly well with it for 3 nights. At this point, I had planned on keeping it. Then, upon returning home,I unpacked it to dry it out more thoroughly, and I noticed that one of the metal ferrules had just fallen off the end of one of the fly rods. I was so disappointed, as I knew I could not justify keeping this tent.



It is my opinion, based on examining a LOT of tents, that this tent, as much as I want to say otherwise, is no better in quality than those that are half the price from Walmart or similar stores. From the crooked weak stitching, to the inferior fabric, to the horribly assembled rods, I saw no reason to pay twice as much as a similar tent.



Either Eureka quality has dramatically gone down over the years, or they are having their less expensive tents built by some inferior company, and selling them with the Eureka name. One thing is absolute, this tent was not near the quality of the one I bought years ago for about the same price, not even close. I am guessing that if I kept this tent, it wouldn't have lasted more than 2 years of regular camping. I returned it.



I would have given it 3 stars because that's what it is, and AVERAGE tent. However, because it cost twice as much as the same size AVERAGE tent from Walmart, I had to deduct 1 star. If you want an average tent that will perform just as good as this one, you can get one for half the price. If you want a high-quality tent for more money, look elsewhere. I wish I could recommend this tent but I cannot.

In the past I rarely tent camped -- just two backpack tenting experiences (on Sado Island for Earth Festival), two car camping expeditions (in Yellowstone, then Malibu) and one week living in a platform tent while working at a Girl Scout Camp in high school.



So I was nervous about committing to a tent.



I read all kinds of reviews of mass-produced tents and higher-end tents. I'd decided that if I couldn't get a higher-end tent (a Kelty, an REI or a Eureka) at a good price I'd go with a mass-produced 4-person Quest Eagle's Peak at Dick's for [..]



I do energy work and thought "Why not use Law of Attraction for the perfect tent?"



So I wrote in my journal "I'd like the Eureka Tetragon 5 for [..] or less or even better."



The next day after lunching with my friends, I rushed to Dick's b/c I had to get up the road.



Imagine my excitement when I saw the Eureka Tetragon 8 for [..]! An unadvertised special!



It's a breeze to put up and take down, and b/c I am a camping wussy, I am happy to say it fits my full-size air-mattress with tons of room for my boyfriend (6" 4"') and me and our gear.



We didn't get the predicted rain, but am confident that it will do well.



Am considering getting some polyfil for underneath from Lowe's.

Having a brand new Tiger Cub and the first of many camping trips coming up this summer a new tent was in order. After reviewing many sites such as EMS, REI, I decided on a four person, 3 season tent.



The Tetragon offers a few of the most important features for me:

- Polyester construction - no nylon means longer life

- Easy setup - think Tiger Cub helper - only 2 poles!

- Desperate fly - passed the garden hose rain test with flying colors

- Right height - my 48" tall son can stand in the middle

- Light weight - not a backpacking tent but easily carried in my ruck sack



Overall, very pleased with this tent - costs a bit more than some Coleman or other large brands, but for me buying a tent from a tent company is important.



Recommend buying the footprint and the correct stakes for you anticipated soil type - this tent doesn't come with them (and shouldn't). Eureka did lose one star for the slightly lower quality stuff sacks - there's no drawstring button (the little spring-loaded clip) to keep the tent in and because the tent poles keep the rolled (or stuffed) length a bit too wide.



Highly recommend despite the 2 VERY minor issues above.

Eureka has long supplied the market with good useable tents that represent excellent dollar values. Set up is a breeze. It has shockcorded aluminum poles which, I've learned over the years, are far more durable and superior to fiberglass if the tent is to be used often. This tent withstood several hours of pounding rain with no leakage and appears stable enough to withstand strong wind. Its ventilation is excellent. It doesn't come with the necessary tie offs for the fly, so, some small nylon rope or cord is needed. The tent pegs are designed to be light, but, inadequate to truly anchor the tent under windy conditions or in loose soil, so, larger pegs may be needed. Care should be taken with zippers (any tent) and this tent could benefit from some zippers with larger teeth. There is no way that this is a four person tent, even if the four were children. I bought it for a roomy one person tent; with two adults it would be snug and purchase of the optional vestible would be adviseable. It packs up nicely and is a good choice for car/truck camping and is compact enough to be suitable for motorcycle camping.



As with all items I've ordered through Amazon, delivery was punctual and communication excellent.

This is the second Timberline 4 I have purchased. The first was 6 years ago when my older son (12 y/o) joined Cub Scouts. He has taken that with him to Boy Scouts and it is still a great shape.

This one is for my youngest son (8 y/o). He will use it and bring it with him to Boy Scouts also.

Both of them can put this tent up by themselves, the youngest needs a little help. The older one can put it up in 20 min by himself. The tent is listed as a 4 man but we only use it as a 2 man with gear.

On a recent very rainy trip with his Troop, he was one of the only Scouts who stayed completely dry.

Never had a single problem with the first, looking forward to many years of use out of our second.

This tent is a good size for 4 people, but I use it with my two young sons. It is not too heavy, easy to set up, and should hold up virtually forever if cared for correctly. I have the two man version also, which is still going strong after 20 + years of fairly regular use. I plan to purchase the vestibule in the near future.

 "Poles broke the first time we used it" 2009-10-04

The tent poles are cheap and several of them snapped the first time the tent was used. Amazon was great with the refund and even paid for return shipping.

We bought 12 of these tents. Right of the bat, 1 of the 12 was missing a grommet to hold the back small pole over the window. Basically killing that tent. After the first year of use 7 of the 12 tents were broken. The number one repair problem with the tents are the poles. The tent uses 4 poles, which in itself makes it harder to setup than most 2 or 3 pole designs. Two poles cross to form the main supports for the tent. 5 tents had these poles break, and we were able to easily repair them. The two small poles over the windows are so thin, I've had 8 of these poles just splinter. The metal ends do not come off, making these impossible to repair. They have to be fully replaced. So far Eureka has failed to respond to 3 email requesting assistance, as their is no place to purchase these pieces to fix the tent. The small poles also lead to holes in the rain fly when being installed, if they slip from the grommet that holds them.



In general when we set the tent up, it was very loose and not very tight, making it look extremely flimsy.



For the money, their are tons of tents that are much more stable and will last longer. I personally chose to not buy something this cheap again and we are buying Alps Mountaineering Tents.

Purchased for light duty. Used few times so far and has worked exactly as advertised. Set-up is simple and can be done by one person.

Fine room for two,but would be crowded for three. Only light rain so far, and was fine. Can be used without stakes if necessary.

Eureka recommends a ground cover under the tent. Easily accomplished and can fit in tent bag. Nice little storage compartments on wall and ceiling. So far well worth the money. Didn't give five stars as it hasn't had a real rain test or the test of time.

This tent is comfortable and easy to assemble. It failed the rainstorm test. I know that every tent needs to be waterproofed and seam-sealed by the owner, and I did that. But a poorly-designed rainfly and multiple points of water-entry ruined it for us. The broken poles are very annoying, but Eureka does have a good warranty policy (not so helpful on a 9-day trip, d'oh).



Pros:

-Easy to set up or take down

-Adore the included gear loft and gear pockets

-comfortably fits 2 people and some gear

-the floor is not too thin (I wasn't worried about anything gouging it)

-Fantastic ventilation. The best is that the side vents are lower down, so if you are trying to sleep, you can feel a breeze on *you* not just above you. Even works well with the rain fly up.



Cons:

-The rain fly does NOT cover the front and back. I waterproofed and seam-sealed the heck out of this, but still we had leaks. The worst was where the rain fly didn't cover. If you look straight down at the tent & fly, you'll see that the bottom halves of the front and back of the tent are not covered by the rain fly. This might work out if you never entered or exited in the rain and had absolutely NOTHING touching the front or back (as in, a single tenter with little stuff). It gave us significant drippage.

-BOTH of the rain fly poles, needed to arch up the fly above the door & window to prevent contact between tent/fly, broke in the first 4 days of use. And they broke at a spot that makes duct tape unhelpful.

-The zipper constantly gets stuck at the bottom. The rain cover for the zipper is a good idea until you are trying to get in and out.

-Locations for water leaks are abundant. The velcro attachments from the rain fly to the tent? Yep. The zipper cover for the door? Bingo. Don't be fooled by the appearance of a sealed bathtub seam on the bottom--not at all. Double seal this one (I didn't).

I'm very happy with our tent. I took it out to Virgina during July 4th and it definitely kept us warm and cozy and very dry during a pretty strong downpour. It comfortably fit me, husband (6'2") and our small-medium sized dog. I loved all the pockets and places to store our stuff like glasses or a watch. It was also very easy to set up and take down.
