"Useful, but with an annoying defect" 2010-02-10

By L. Pilotti (USA)

I bought this because I plan on doing some extended hiking this summer, and it seemed like quite a useful thing to have on the trail. I got a chance to test it out this last week due to the large snowstorms we received that left my home without electricity. I must say that all the features work as indicated and to my satisfaction. I listened to the entire Super Bowl on this with only about 15 minutes total cranking time having to stop once at a commercial break and crank it again for a few minutes. I really only have one complaint about this product, but it is one that can be quite a hassle and one that I ran into, quite literally, after pulling it out of the box. The handle that one uses to crank the charger is attached to the unit with only a small, metal pin. Unfortunately, the pin does not stay in place and can easily move around so that it does not keep the handle in place. The first time that I went to charge it the handle came off and the pin fell to the ground. It took me about twenty minutes to find it in my carpet. If I had been outdoors it would have rendered this totally unusable because you cannot generate any sort of charge without it. After a while I became accustomed to always checking the pin was secure and in the correct position, but it still ended up on the ground four more times over the course of a week. Other than that, however, the product works well and just as it was described.

I liked it a lot, it was easy to use, very bright, lasted for a long long long time! I don't usually exercise that much, it was great for me to exercise myself a little.

"You get what you pay for" 2010-01-17

By Paul J. Perkins (Lebanon, KY United States)

This is the cheapest crank radio/flashlight that I could find, and there's a reason for it.

The LED light works fine. It's not very bright, but it'll keep you from bumping into walls.

I wheeled through all of the AM and FM channels and couldn't get any signal, just static.

It has a hole with a pin in it that's supposedly you can put a cable in to charge things like cell phones via the dynamo crank. The one square of paper documentation gives no details about what sort of cable you would need.

In my opinion, this is the cheap thing you buy before you realize that you really should have just spent a bit more on a better quality item. It'll sit in your kitchen drawer and you'll use it on occasion, mostly for the novelty of cranking your own power, before sticking it back in the drawer for another few years until you rediscover it again.

"A good self powered flashlight" 2009-12-23

By Ming Su (CA USA)

This is a very nice tool. It can be used for camping, placed in your nightstand, or in the glove box. There are 2 levels for the light. The low level lights up 1 led, and the high level lights 5 leds. It's not super bright, but again, it's more than enough if you only use it while walking your dog. The radio buttons are some kinda small, thus may be difficult for some people to change channel. It also has a siren function, but not very loud. With about 1 minute cranking, the battery can hold enough electricity for the flashlight to work with all 5 leds lit up for about 45 minutes, and then fade out about 20 minutes. The radio consumes much more electricity than the leds. You can only expect the radio work for 5 minutes at most. The crank is relatively hard to crank, i.e. more resistant, if you clockwise, but easy the other way. I assume more electricity could be generated with more resistance. The quality is OK for its price. Everything outside is made of plastic. The crank is hold by two very small screws, as the result, I dare not to crank fast and use my full strength when cranking. The flashlight button is removable and came off the second day when my 4-year old son played with it. But I believe a little glue will fix it. Overall, I'm happy with this purchase.

"Nice product to have around" 2009-11-01

By bookowski (Brooklyn)

This is a very useful little product and for the price well worth it. I know there are a lot of different levels of quality in these and if you plan on heavy use you may want to research it and get the best. I don't know much about that but for occasional use this one seems to be a good value. The light is strong and the radio works fine. If you are someone that never has batteries every time you go to use your current light this is a good buy.
