Coleman Instant 14- by 10- Foot 8- Person Two Room Tent Specifications

Tired of tents that promise a quick setup, but still have you puzzling over the shock-corded poles 10 minutes in? Turn to the Coleman eight-person Instant Tent, which assembles and collapses in one minute or less.

The Coleman Instant Tent sets up and collapses in 1 minute or less.
The secret to the tent's seamless setup is the pole system, which comes pre-attached to the tent. As a result, assembly couldn't be easier: just unfold the tent, spread it out, extend the poles, click them together, and lock them into place. Before you know it, you'll have a full two-room tent that stands 14 by 10 feet, with a center height of 6 feet 5 inches.

Despite the tent's versatility, it's still as strong and weatherproof as ever, with Coleman's exclusive WeatherTec system helping protect you from inclement weather and nasty storms. WeatherTec tents are built with a coated polyester fabric combined with anti-wicking thread, webbing, and zippers, all designed to keep you dry when the rain comes down. The tent's welded waterproof floor and inverted floor seams, meanwhile, dramatically increase the water resistance by hiding the needle holes inside the tent and away from the elements. And campers will love the strong, wind-responsive frame, which includes redesigned poles and guy-out triangles that anchor the tents and increase performance. In fact, Coleman is so confident in its WeatherTec system that it exposes its WeatherTec tents to a rain room that simulates nasty downpours, and to a wind machine capable of blowing hurricane force gusts. The results? Even after the tests, Coleman guarantees its WeatherTec tents will keep you dry.

The tent's exterior is tough and long-lasting, with heavy-duty 150D construction that's twice as thick as Coleman's standard tent fabric. When combined with the fully taped rain fly seams, the tent can even keep you dry without requiring a separate rain fly. The tent also offers ample room for sleeping or hanging out. Campers have their choice of sleeping in one large room with enough space for eight people, or dropping down the divider and turning the tent into a two-room palace. And hot nights will seem far more refreshing thanks to the two doors and seven windows, which provide terrific ventilation and 360-degree views. Other features include vertical walls that make it easy to stand and move about the tent, an interior gear pocket, reverse angle windows, and easy-to-follow instructions sewn into the durable carrying bag. The tent carries a limited one-year warranty.

The tent boasts a roomy interior with sleeping space for up to 8 people.

About Coleman
More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.

In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

Tired of tents that promise a quick setup, but still have you puzzling over the shock-corded poles 10 minutes in? Turn to the Coleman eight-person Instant Tent, which assembles and collapses in one minute or less.

The Coleman Instant Tent sets up and collapses in 1 minute or less.

About Coleman
The Coleman Company has been creating and innovating products for recreational outdoor use since W.C. Coleman started selling gasoline-powered lanterns in 1900. Inventor of the hugely popular fold-up camp stove, Coleman developed a plastic liner for his galvanized steel coolers in 1957--the birth of the modern cooler--and the company has been improving their utility and design ever since. The array of products that bear the Coleman name now includes just about everything you might need to work or play outdoors, from tents and sleeping bags to boats, backpacks, and furniture.

Amazon.com Tent Guide
Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.

Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

"Great tent for the $" 2009-08-26
By Dawn & Patrick (Arcanum, OH USA)
I shopped & shopped for a simple quality family tent and decided on this one, Kelty has a good reputation for quality stuff at a reasonable price. The tent was a good size for my son & I (scouting), all our stuff and plenty of headroom (I'm 6'). In fact the specs show 72", I didn't measure but I have 2-3" clearance still. I've done my fair share of camping, backpacking, climbing and overnight rafting trips etc. no stranger to needing, wanting and knowing quality.

I've posted some of the complaints I've seen on this tent during my research.

1. The tight zipper comments, Yes I did find when you attach the fly, the poles stretched the fabric right above the doors and made them difficult to close without pulling and snagging .

Solution:

I quickly realized tying loops at ends of a small cord <2" the length of the stretch and hooked on the ends of the fly poles solved that problem. This relieved enough pressure, is out of the way, stays about 1" above the top of the door and 1" away from the tent. I cannot see where this effects the tent structure at all, I think Kelty may find this solution helpful. Otherwise, claims of junk zippers I don't understand unless one forces them enough to make them junk (impatience and loss of self control can do that).

2. Hard to set up for one person?

I could do it... But where's the family to help, what else can I say, this is a big tent, family tent..

3. Bent poles?

I don't know what to say except I don't understand that one, these are the beafiest aluminum poles I've ever seen. Maybe these people don't understand the poles for this tent have a slight pre-bend already. Or they didn't stake the guys down properly. Maybe in extreme (hurricane force) winds?

4. High Price?

Shop around, Kelty shows an MSRP at $299 and most retailers had it still for $200+, I found it for $179 w/free S+H, hey no complaint there for sure.

5. Leaks - I read all the reviews and discarded the ones who claim the thing leaks and glad I did, no problems there.

6. Sagging fabric - again I don't understand, this thing is as tight as you want it.

7. Poor ventilation - I can't help a whole lot with this one. No problem if there is a breeze, there are no vents down low. On a hot day it may be, I wouldn't be inside it then, couldn't tell you. I've not been in it on a hot night.

8. Thin footprint - the Kelty FP is made of the same material (not the stuff the high end expedition tents use) but hey, good stuff. what you are doing is doubling up a good thing. It's obvious why you would buy one.

If you decide to buy, as for most of the reviews I've seen, I'm sure it will work out for you too. Enjoy

"Great tent for Family Camping" 2009-08-07
By Scoutmaster (San Jose CA)
Having had a Coleman tent for years, I did research and decided to get the Kelty Trail Dome 6 Six Person Tent. The main reason I was looking for a roomy tent was for Boy Scout Summer Camp in California and one I could use all year round.

The poles are very sturdy and the tent is roomy. Set-up for two Scouts was a no brainer. The zippers worked well to get in and out of the tent. It was a big plus being able to stand up inside the tent.

All in all, a great family tent that you will enjoy for years to come.

 "Quality tent" 2008-09-30
By M. Mendenhall (Tennessee)
I've had this tent for two seasons now and I am very pleased with it. This tent performs great in the rain mainly because the rain fly comes all the way to the ground and both doors have overhangs which extends the fly by using poles. We've not got wet yet even in some bad thunderstorms.

A feature that is important to me is that I cand stand all the way up in it and I'm 6'3". Also, the sides of the tent come up at a higher angle making very good use of floor space. Set up takes about 10 minutes with two shock corded poles and color coded rain fly buckles. Nothing has broken, ripped or unraveled after dozens of outings making it a quality buy. The only thing has been the whimpy stakes that came with that bent easily. I went to the Mart and got some of the spike stakes and I'm ready for woods rock festival or whatever comes down the pike.

 "Nice tent, but..." 2007-06-26
By Jeff042479 (Minneapolis, MN)
I have had this tent for about 4 years now. I use it 2 weeks a year for car camping fishing trips. This tent sets up easily and quickly. It is roomy once set up and very comfortable for 2 big guys on twin air matresses with all of their gear for a week. It doesn't exchange air very well when the fly is on it. If it is hot outside, chances are it is going to be hotter inside the tent. I can live with the ventilation issues. The major drawback to this tent is the way the water flows off of it. On the front of the tent, the floor wraps over the outside of the wall panel. The water runs off the fly, down the front of the tent and sits on top of this seam. Every time it rains, water leaks in this seam. I have put sealer on it, but when water sits on a seam, it is going to get in. That is my only complaint. A bit more overhang of the fly, or changing that seam would make this tent a lot better. Still a good tent.

 "Tent Review" 2007-05-08
By Christina Sichley (California, USA)
UPDATE:

I returned from my 6-week geology field camp in Ely, NV at 8,000 ft where we saw rain, snow, hail, constant sun, and very high winds. The rain fly went on in the beggining of the trip and I never had to tamper with it again -"Set it and forget it!". My only complaint is in regards to the tent stakes, which I immediately replaced with 2 ft. long reubar stakes that ACE gladly cut and bent. While setting up the tent I had to stake it down then buckle and stake the fly as well. Before I staked all that down I position the doors and vestibule area perpendicular to the dominant wind direction. This protected cold air from flowing in, but still allowed ventilation during the day -unlike other hardcore rain-flys. Together the fly and strong aluminum poles add much stability in those windy conditions day/night -the tent didn't bend down or bow out. I did have to wake up to push snow off the sides of my tent and it bounced back into position.

Neither rain or hail or any water for that matter made it inside or under the tent. The direction you set the vestibules is key in protection from wind and in-coming storms.

The Traildome 6 is very roomy -with space above my 5'4" head. Floor space was plentiful for one person with a month and a half's load of gear. My 8 ft. long cot fit nicely along the sides with extra room and didn't even block the doorways.

Overall, the tent was still going strong and looked just as beautiful as the day I recieved it. I highly recommend this tent, especially for long-term camping folk or field camps.

6-weeks of Nevada has nothing on this tent!

*I bought this tent for a 6-week field camp in Nevada next month, so I've only used it once so far. I really like the strong poles and it's very easy to set up. Inside pockets are nice, but cupholder pockets would be perfect! Overall, for my first use, I was pleased. The real test will be the 6 weeks in the snow, desert, and wind!

 "Very Nice Lightweight Tent" 2009-09-05
By DocOne (Albuquerque, NM)
I selected this tent for the size and reasonably light weight. For two people, the backpacking weight is just a bit over 2-1/2 pounds per person which is not bad considering the size and large dual vestibules. It is a bit larger than most comparably dome tents inside which is a plus if you are tall or wish to stow some gear inside the tent. The gear vestibules on both sides are also larger than most, and being able to enter and stow gear on both sides is a plus as you don't have to step over someone else to get in or out. The tent is well constructed and goes up quickly. With the dual vents on top and generous screening I have not had any significant problems with condensation, and the full fly ensures you will remain dry even in severe weather. The only negative I've noticed is the snap at the bottom of the fly zipper, which can be a pain to close from the inside of the tent, but this is a relatively minor issue. Overall a great buy!

The main issue with this tent is the poor quality of the mosquito netting which comprises a good deal of the tent. This is the first tent that I have owned where the netting getting pulls in it. I am quite careful with my gear and was surprised after a few uses to have pulls. The design is good and set up is easy.

"Kelty Gunnison 2.1 (vs the REI Half Dome)" 2009-06-30
By Eric Varboncouer (Illinois)
I bought this for use as a two person backpacking and car camping tent. I also bought a REI half dome two person tent to which I compared it. These are very similarly designed tents. I set up both tents (in my living room) and did a side-by-side comparison. I never actually used the tent and so can only speak to its design and not its actual performance. I ultimately returned the Kelty Gunnison 2.1 tent but it was a close call and I will explain the good & the not so bad below.

First, I feel that for the weight & price, it would be hard to find a more spacious tent. The Kelty Gunnison felt a little more spacious than the REI half dome which was no slouch in this category as well. This is consistent with the Kelty's reported 3 more square feet (37 sq ft total) than the REI half dome. For people who are tall (over 6'--I am 6'2") this is a very long tent at 92". This is 2 inches longer than the rei half dome. Both tents are longer than many ultralight tents that I have sadly found to typically not be be designed with people over 6' in mind. For instance, the REI QUARTER dome is a tight fit for any one over 6'. The Gunnison is also listed at a 40" peak height which is fairly decent and I was able to sit upright in the tent comfortably. However, if you are 6'2" or above, the extra inch of height in the REI half dome is just enough that you can get a little farther from the center of the tent & still be upright. This would be handy if you were sitting in the tent with someone at night or riding out a storm. Weight wise the Kelty gunnsion is listed as a few ounces less in weight than the REI half dome. The kelty is reported to have a package weight of 5 lbs 9 oz. I considered the weight difference to be insignificant. There are lighter weight options for two person tents, but they will not have as much space and will be more costly.

The vestibules for the Kelty are massive with each vestibule being listed at 12 sq ft for the kelty and 9 sq ft each for the REI half dome. I obviously did not stake out either tent in my house, but the kelty vestibules definitely seemed larger. These vestibules would leave plenty of room for backpacks and probably the proverbial kitchen sink as well.

Next I will address the design of the tent. The kelty uses a plastic, but reasonably sturdy appearing hub for the tent poles whereas the half dome uses a metal one. On the Kelty tent, the rainfly and tent body are connected to the tent poles using plastic Jake's Foot connectors. On the half dome they are connected through the more traditional metal grommets. The entrance doors on both sides of the Kelty are smaller and more in the center of the tent than for the REI half dome. With the rainfly on, this made it slightly more difficult for easy entrance & exit with the Gunnison. This may theoretically also mean the Gunnsion would offer more protection from the rain getting in and out of the tent, but I obviously did not get to test this theory. I also am not aware of problems with the half dome in this regard. The overall tent body and rainfly of both tents seemed very similar in regards to material. The vents and netting also seemed reasonably comparable and I can only guess that ventilation in both tents would be reasonably similar.

For me, I ultimately chose the half dome over the gunnison but it was a tough call and I liked the gunnison's design as well. My biggest issue with the tent was the plastic hub and the plastic Jake's foot connectors. These are used in other tents as well. They may work great, but I personally prefer the metal hub and grommets of the half dome. I also liked the size and position of the doors much more in the half dome. The gunnsion was a little more spacious and had larger vestibules, but I felt this difference was not too dramatic.

In summary, I felt the Kelty Gunnsion 2.1 is a spacious tent with large vestibules at a decent price. It is a great option for tall individuals. I personally do not like the Jake's foot connectors or the plastic hub as they do not appear very rugged. However, I do not have any evidence that this would ever be a problem in the field longterm. I would have preferred doors that were a little larger and less centered. However, this may not be as much of an issue for smaller individuals and may be advantageous in rain. My preference would also be for a lighter tent, but for the space and money I dont think you can find a better deal. If you were wanting a lighter two person tent that would also be good for taller people, I would check out the big agnes emerald series or the the big agnes copper spur series. However, the improved weight is offset by smaller space and higher price.

Pitched Kelty Green River 6 tent up for the first time in my back yard today.

Stretched and laid out the four poles as instructed.

Mistaken the fly cover for the tent and couldn't find the holes and which was the top or bottom side of tent.

(Strange how nothing match the instruction?) Oh, there is another material inside the bag and it turn out to be the tent. The bigger wrapped material was the fly cover.

Now I'm in business. Orientated the tent on the footprint and there I go. It was easy to put up by myself. However, it took an little imagination and resourcefulness to get the fly cover over the top of the tent. Got it by using a rope attached to the fly and throwing the rope over the tent to the back side.

Tent has a lot of snaps and tie downs, but it looks great. Wife came out from the house to checked it out. She loves the roomy tent and height with storage compartments.

The next time it will take me less time to put up, now that I am familiar with it. Piece of cake.

This tent is great but LARGE!! It says 6 person tent and must mean 6 really big people. If you are bringing it camping and need to fit it on a site with another tent - you may have a problem doing so - ours barely fit on the campsite with our friends. On the flip side, it holds everyone and everything - we fit a queen air mattress, 2 single air mattresses and had plenty of room to spare for all of our other belongings not to mention the front porch area that gives even more space. This tent stayed completely dry - not a drop of water in it through 2 major thunderstorms with gusting wind, etc. I would highly recommend this tent.

 "Wild NH Mountain Camping" 2008-08-23
By C. Renaud
Well, My wife and I like going camping, but room and comfort is always a priority. We used to use my parents huge cabin tent, old style type, with solid poles and canvas walls. But that tent weighed about 50 lbs. So when we were looking for a tent we wanted room, especially since we were going to go with a 3 month old and would need enough space for a pack N Play. THis tent was kind of the middle ground for what we were looking for, so we went with it. It is tough to say how great tents are these days especially since now they make the floor witht he same material as the walls, and to me, is just not as durable as the good ol' days with the "tarp" style floors I grew up with, now a days you have to put the footprint down first. So we got this tent and went on a NH trip in the mountains this past July. we had a great site, in the mountains near Lost river. the tent was easy enough to set up but 2 people make it easier just because of the size. Now as for how it performed. the first night we had 3 torrential thunderstorms in a row, and we were kept dry. the next day it rained on and off and then we had another torrential thunderstorm, and a small seem on the rain fly started to leak a little into the vestibule, but was minor (I had yet to seal the seams, as you should to make it waterproof!) So after 5 heavy thunderstorms, with almost 2-3 inches of rain. the tent worked better than I expected. I have now seam sealed all the rainfly seams, and sprayed the tent with Silicone tent water proofer, mostly because I am paranoid... Overall it is a good tent. I would recommend it if you plan on camping in mountians or cooler temp camping ie. fall, because I had it set up in the sun in the back yard to waterprrof it and it got really toasty inside! Just wish tent companies still made their tents with heavy duty tarp floors!

 "Spacious and Well-Made" 2008-07-30

I was looking for a tent roomy enough to fit a family of 4 but also provide complete rain fly coverage. This tent fits the bill perfectly. The inside is extremely spacious, helped by very high ceilings. There was no problem sleeping 2 adults and 2 kids inside this tent. The vestibule (my favorite part of the tent) is huge, and housed 7 adults (standing, mind you) seeking shelter from a quick rainstorm.

The set-up is as easy as any tent I have seen. Two people can easily tackle the set-up, but I have done it by myself a few times without any hassle. In high winds, however, make sure you have at least 2 sets of hands as the height of this tent makes it susceptible during set-up (and only during set-up). The corded poles can separate when trying to take down the tent, but compared to my last two tents this task is MUCH easier. These poles are much better constructed than the more flimsy ones of cheaper brands.

I have only had one rain to test this tent out in, and it was not a long event. I had seem sealed the rear seem (the one part of the tent the rain fly does not cover) and did a rough job all around the floor/wall seem (as others have suggested, this should have been factory taped). After the rain, I literally had 5 drops of rain insde the tent. It appears to have come through the floor/wall seem where the rain fly did not cover. After returning home, I sealed this seem again (I did a quick job the first time around) and do not expect any further problems.

Lastly, as an earlier reviewer stated, the footprint does not include the vestibule. I would suggest a small throw rug/tarp for the vestibule that is NOT attached to the main footprint/tarp. Since the vestibule is not totally rainproof (the blinds do flap in the wind a bit) some water might come in during an intense rain storm. If your vestibule tarp is attached to the main tent tarp, water could run down underneath your tent (depending on slope, of course). It is probably best to leave a few inches between the two to prevent this from happening.

All in all, this tent was well worth the money. After an exhaustive search, it had everything I wanted at a relatively low cost.

 "Great 1 room tent" 2006-11-27
By k.r.a (Nor Cal)
Just used this for our first camping trip - big 1 room tent - so if you don't have to have more than one room this is a great tent - the vestibule is a great mud room/storage area, which frees up the inside for sleeping & stuff - we fit a queen mattress, 2 small kids sleeping bags and a pack n play inside and still had extra room... rained the first night - all night - not a drop inside, just condensation. Be aware that the vestibule is not part of the Kelty "footprint" for the tent, so make sure you have a big tarp for the whole tent, or an extra tarp for just the vestibule. Overall a great one room family tent, water tight, spacious, easy to put up - looking forward to using it again.
