"not great, but ok for now" 2009-10-19
By SQ in California
I'm buying my third only because I've not found what I really want. I used it camping for awhile...not worth it. Now I use it to cover my back patio table and chairs in California. I am a 50+ yo female in good shape. I can set up shade on my own, but it is a huge pain. Very, very difficult. Do not bother using in wind...lays on its side. Doesn't keep rain out so worthless when weather changes occur on a trip. Does shade a small area when no wind. Fragile fabric...my second even tore while setting up, but the shock cords are strong. Using it 24/7 lasts about 1 1/2 years with shreds and holes appearing until there is nothing left. I secure it with concrete blocks and heavy furniture and they are pulled by the wind force in the shade. When camping, I tried to use boulders and finally just took it down in heavy winds. When a rain storm came up on another trip, I sat under it for awhile and got soaked. Finally took down in the mud. Not possible to get back into stuff sack 99% of time. I recommend two people to set up and use only on sunny days with no wind. Don't take camping unless you know there is no wind or bad weather. I think it is way over-priced for its durability and functionality. Hopefully, I'll find a better brand then no more Kelty.

"Kelty Large Sunshade Not for the Beach" 2009-07-20
By Sidney A. Smith
I purchased the Kelty Large Sunshade for our vacation to use on the beach. Although it did provide adequate shade, it was very hard to put up. It required at least two people to get the poles in the sleeves. Once the poles were in the sleeves it required one person to hold one end of the first pole while the other tried to arch the pole and get the end into the grommet. The worst thing about it was that if the wind was blowing directly into a pole, the poles would bend downward on top of you. I tried to put more arch in the pole to prevent this reverse arch, but it did not really help. Trying to take it down in the wind was also very hard. This product appeared to be for the beach but it does not do well in the wind. Also it is vey hard to see out of unless you are sitting very low to the ground. The stuff sack was rather small and difficult to get everything back in and it did not have a strap for carrying. I would not really recommend for the beach. It did however hold up without ripping or tearing.
