 "Too heavy and expensive" 2010-03-23

By Frank T. Steele (Phoenix, AZ USA)

These things weigh between 3 and 4 oz a piece. They are hard to drink from sometimes (Mouth too wide) and the lid is a pain (Hits you in the nose if you don't hold it)

Here's an Idea, buy an Aquafina (Or any other brand) bottle at the gas-station or 7-11. The bottle only weighs 1.5 oz, is nearly indestructible and COMES WITH WATER!

Problem solved.

"You can never go wrong with a Nalgene!!!!" 2010-03-21

By kitanubis

You can never go wrong with a Nalgene product. I have two of them myself, and two for my girl. I bought this one for the color (she loves purple), and my fiancee and she loves it! I only wish the options in the color selection was a little better for both the wide mouth and bottle neck styles. If anyone from Nalgene is reading this... bring back the old logo!!!!!!!!!!

"An honest review. It's fantastic. Simple enough." 2010-03-06

By J. H. (Chicago, IL USA)

Love it. It wont break, trust me. I have seen one get thrown out a bus on the highway while going 65 mph. It barely had scratches on it, and was intact upon retrieval. Also have seen a cinder block dropped on it, and it was fine. If you can't manage to drink carefully, buy the $2 splash guard and save yourself from looking stupid from spilling and then probably looking even more stupid by complaining about it later on an Amazon review.

Nalgene is the best of it's kind and I love it. I'll never get a different brand.

 "best waterbottle!" 2010-02-28

By Cake (Atlanta, GA)

I went on a huge aluminum bottle phase, but going back to the nalgene has been the best for me! They are made a lot better these days with really fun colors. The wide mouth is easier to clean and fill and I love how effortless it is. But it gets a little heavy (because of the liquid) so I dont carry it around with me to many places

 "tried and true" 2010-02-20

By Lon Risinger (Houston, TX United States)

Nalgene bottles are a tried and true staple of hiking and backpacking. I've been using them for years and I recently updated to the bpa free bottles. It seems just the as good as any other nalgene bottle I've owned and I love the green color. In general the different colors can help you distinguish your bottle from your friends bottles or from bottles reserved for different purposes.

 "product nearly gone" 2010-03-16

By William H. Patterson (Nashville, TN United States)

The container I received was nearly empty. Perhaps 1 "capful" was in the jar. I suspect the product had been on the shelf a while and the iodine had sublimed. Amazon allows a refund but I must drop it off at a UPS center which is not close by. So, I must either forfeit the $13.00 or waste an hour of my time returning it. My advice is to exercise your judgement when ordering things on line which are essentially perishable.

"Good To Have Because You Never Know" 2010-02-11

By J. Doyle (Northeast, USA)

This should definitely be in everyone's survival kit - follow the directions and you should have no problems. Just in case anyone has concerns, the iodine crystals will not come out of the bottle. There is a nice little "crystal catcher" built into the bottle that prevents them from falling out; trust me, it was the first thing I checked! Since the bottle is glass, I made a bubble-wrap sleeve for it to cut down the risk of breakage; however, I think you would have to work overtime to break it because the bottle looks like it could survive falling out of your pack.

 "Great product." 2010-01-28

By Gabriel Quinones (California)

Pros: Its a small compact bottle that is able to disinfect large amounts of water.its very convenient, no having to worry about measuring.Unlike other disinfecting products, this doesn't expire which makes storing easy. For the price its the best thing around.(cleans 500 gallons instead of 25)

Cons: The bottle doesn't come sealed. I'm worried about somebody tampering with the bottle(shrink wrap isn't expensive).Like someone said before the bottle is made out of glass and might break.

Overall a great product to have in an emergency preparedness kit or camping backpack. I do a lot of hiking and it will come in handy.

 "A Great Solution" 2010-01-13

By The Good News

I had read in books that one of the best methods for purifying water was by using iodine crystals, but I must admit, I didn't really understand the concept.

This is a bottle that is about 3 inches high, inside is a relatively small amount of iodine crystals that appear similar in size and shape to shotgun pellets.

The process is to fill the small bottle with water, let it sit for an hour, and then pour the liquid from the bottle (measured in capfuls using the bottle cap) into a liter of water for purification. On the side of the bottle is a simplified strip thermometer which indicates how many capfuls of liquid to use based on the temperature of the solution. The bottle has a built in mechanism (really just a tube but it is difficult to explain) that prevents the iodine crystals from being poured out of the bottle during the process.

The process is similar to using water purification tablets with the added advantage of indefinite shelf life and lower cost.

The bottle has all instructions 'painted' on the side which is an added plus. The product also comes with an short description of various purification methods, which is both interesting and 'transparent' as the company is not just promoting their own product.

The company's web site is basic and provides more details if you have interest; and, to give them credit, they responded to one of my e-mail questions within an hour.

If I was starting a basic disaster / survival kit, this would be one of my first four purchases; behind a flashlight, first aid kit, and a good knife.

Two things to note...the bottle is thick glass (I would guess relatively hard to break) and if you keep the bottle full of water, take steps to ensure that the water does not freeze as the bottle will likely break.

An interesting approach to water purification and a well-implemented product.

 "Good but with cautions" 2010-01-13

By TucsonShopper (Tucson, Arizona)

Shri says, "Just dip your water bottle over the side of the canoe to fill, add a capful of Polar Pure solution, shake, and wait 20 minutes" - but this may be dangerous advice. The problem is any water left on the outside of Shri's water bottle was, of course, not cleaned by putting iodine inside the bottle. Since Shri didn't get sick, the water was probably never contaminated (often the case). Shri should have, perhaps did, "burp" the treated water bottle in order to clean the outside as well. Just as important, though, is to regularly clean hands and cooking utensils (since these are more often the sources of bacteria and viruses). You can reduce the minor iodine aftertaste by halving the dose and doubling the wait time - including doubling either dose or time if water is cloudy (easier with this product than tablets like Potable Aqua Water Treatment Tablets). Instead, I add an acidic sport mix to both counter (turns the iodine to iodide) and cover aftertaste (only after 30 minutes to next day wait to let iodine first do its work). I dilute powder with twice recommended water to aid faster digestion.

Issues being addressed are large 2-15 micron Protozoa and medium 0.2-0.6 micron Bacteria most likely to affect dehydration by causing diarrhea as well as rare small 0.02-0.03 micron Viruses from other humans (so, animal waste not really a problem) most feel are actually not likely in U.S. Issues not being addressed include very large 25 micron tapeworm eggs, etc from raw sewage contamination (dealt with by any filtration including with coffee filter or boiling). Tennimon's natural sand filter suggestion could take a week to work optimally (so, water should be treated anyway) and his claim of nasty taste (while never trying) is wholly unfounded. Just fill the Polar Pure bottle with water and shake. The solution will be ready for use in about an hour. The particle trap should prevent crystals from getting into the water - this is important as iodine in a crystal is poisonous and can burn tissue or eyes. Always refill the bottle so the solution will be ready for next use. Enough to treat about 2,000 quarts (compared to 50 quarts for tablets).

When camping, take water from the surface since it will be cleaned by the sun's ultraviolet rays while giving floc a chance to settle. Important to remember iodine is less effective (requiring more) if water is below "room" temperature, so warming water first can be useful (say, by leaving in sun). Best if water is filtered in any way (even if just with a coffee filter) as floc can shield pathogens from iodine (and no one likes to chew their water). Even the very best filters, though, can possibly leave some types of viruses (which are tiny dead protein fragments) but which iodine will destroy. I prefer this to other forms of iodine as well as chlorine (if just for the indefinite shelf life) - only other treatment product I would consider is Aqua Mira Water Treatment (1 kit) (good for 120 quarts). No treatment, of course, will affect toxins like industrial waste or heavy metals from mining tailings. Don't use if allergic to shellfish (since you may also be allergic to iodine). Good for foreign travel as well as backpacking. Homeland Security also recommends having at home in case of emergency, they prefer boiling or filtering AND treating water to be 100% safe.

I'm 17. I've been looking for a backpack b/c my handbag was really starting to hurt my shoulder. This backpack is great!!!!!!! I take it everywhere. It's light and the straps are comfy. It's always on the ground in school and never gets torn. There is alot of space too. I carry a typical 3 in. binder, two folders, 4 journals, 2 english books, a pencil case, 4 oz water bottles, and my handbag! Its very cool. I recently took it on a trip when I was traveling and it fit all my clothes and other necessities. I'm glad I got this backpack. It also arrived 2 days later. BOOST!!!

"The last bookbag you'll ever need to purchase" 2010-02-24

By Eli (S. FL)

My black JanSport Superbreak Classic Backpack rocks! It is very well made and constructed. The material feels great and sturdy. It holds all of my heavy college books and then some!

There is a pocket inside the smaller compartment that is great for holding my wallet when I don' feel like having it in my pocket. The bag is not too big. Its simple and just right, not bulky.

The top loop is great for hanging it on the hook that's on the door of the restroom stall when you don't want to place it on the floor.

This thing looks great in black. I was afraid that the blue background of the JanSport logo (that is on the black bags) was going to be too bright, but thankfully it is darker than it is in the photo. It is a dark navy color.

This bag comes with a lifetime warranty that I doubt I will ever need. I'm sure that this is the last backpack I'll ever need to get! :)

"Great product even better company!" 2010-03-19

By Mollie D. Young (MA)

We have used these cups for quite some time. After finding out bpa was in most kids cups I found these and Nalgene kids cups to be the best. I like the straw cups the best.

It does leak a few drops if left on its side but liquid doesn't pour out. My kids love that they have a cup like Mommy's bigger camelbak cup. They also look very cool!

My son gave his camelbak cup to our puppy one day needless to say by the time I found it the dog had chewed most of the cover, the straw and the sip valve to pieces. I emailed the company hoping I could buy a replacement they were so nice and sent me 2 straws, a bite valve and a cover even asking what color I wanted for free!

How many companies do that? I will be ordering again!

 "I LOVE THESE BOTTLES!" 2010-02-24

By Ingrid Thomas (Cincinnati, OH)

I was so tired of always having spilled juice/water in my bag (i keep their "spill-proof" cups in my big purse when we got out) so I invested a little more and bought the stainless steel version of these from another website. Great, except the stainless steel can't go in the dishwasher & we had to use bottle scrubbers and even then I didn't feel super comfortable with the smell in them. The painted designs were slightly chipping off and then my 2 year old son did what I had been trying my hardest to avoid: he lost his $20 cup. So then I came to amazon and bough the BPA-free plastic version and I LOVE them. They really don't leak. There is liquid trapped in the bite-straw portion that will gradually leak out but it's limited to that small volume. I could probably squeeze that out before loading them up in my purse if I cared enough. The bite straw took a little while for them to learn & they rejected these cups the first two times I offered it to them, but then again, my children are 4 and 2. Once they learned, these were their instant favorite cups. And their friends' favorite cups. Everyone wants to drink out of their cups. i take these apart and throw them in the dishwasher & life is less complicated than with the stainless steel version. They love hooking their finger through the loop and carrying them around that way and they also get a huge kick out of pressing the button to make the straw flip up. And the straws are LONG and even reach down to the bottom of the bottle so that I don't have to refill the drink until it really is empty. I also haven't noticed the paint chipping off. Oh, and one was accidentally placed next to a waffle-iron-in-use and it only slightly warped the bottle; it's still usable. They're also cheaper and much lighter than the stainless steel version. I will be buying two more for my children since they're the only cups I will put in my purse when we go out now. I even want one for me, that's how much I love them!

 "Okay." 2010-03-13

By K. Guan

I purchased this a little over 6 months ago because I got a new job and didn't have a car, so I found myself walking home at night a lot. I live in what a lot of people would consider a safe neighborhood, so I never felt the need to be paranoid about anything. But one night, I was approached by an older man who was persistent in wanting to talk to me and knowing where I went to school. Nothing happened to me, but I guess you could say it scared me enough to finally get something to protect myself.

When I got the pepper spray in the mail, the first thing I noticed was how cute it was, being a pink-lover. I tested it out on a bush, and I'd say it has pretty good range. I love how it has a key ring on the other end and a little clip for easy access if I ever immediately needed it. The only few things I would say is that it doesn't seem all that powerful. I expected the spray to be wide and dispersed, but it's more like a single line shot out. If I can give you a mental image, it's like one of those tiny toy water guns that squirts out a thin line of water. The safety lock is also a little iffy. I attached it to my set of keys, and there were a couple times where the safety lock came off while it was inside my bag, so be aware of it if you're taking things in and out.

Overall, I would still recommend this product. There were a few times so far where I have had to take it out for precautionary measures, but luckily I haven't been in a situation yet where I have had to use it. I'm going away to college in a couple months, and I actually feel a little better knowing I carry pepper spray with me, definitely gives me more peace of mind. Even if you don't feel like you'd ever need it, might as well be safe than sorry. And plus, it's pink! (:

 "Perfect..." 2010-03-19

By Jonathan A. Drake (Decatur, IL)

My wife and I are having some friends visit in a couple of weeks, and then we're having more company the following weekend. We have spare bedrooms, but do not own guest bedroom furniture. The thought of dropping a few hundred on something we would feel comfortable letting our friends sleep on was daunting, so we turned to air mattresses instead. I browsed products and reviews for a few days but kept coming back to this Intex model. It was definitely the highest reviewed among the products I looked at, and for the size, the most attractive in price. Coupled with Amazon's free shipping, this seemed too good to be true, but within a couple of days of ordering I was plugging it in and giving it a test nap.

From the moment I opened the package to the moment it was ready for testing, a full six minutes elapsed. Only slightly less than four of those were the actual inflation process. I am highly impressed at the speed it goes from completely flat, to completely full. It has a pleasant firmness, and although it lost some pressure during the first overnight test, I woke up without a kink in my back as I usually do on a typical camping air mattress. The height is perfect, and the grooves along the side make fitting it with sheets just like a regular mattress.

I am also impressed with how quickly it can be deflated. The built-in pump has a directional setting that allows you to reverse the flow and actually pump air out. This allows you to fully deflate the mattress in about as much time as it takes to set it up.

Some reviewers mentioned using it as their full-time mattress. I don't know that I would make that switch, but I do know that for an immediate solution to the problem of providing for guests, this is perfect. Don't waste your money on something twice the price, when you can get all you need with this one.

Every airbed I have ever used in the past leaked and was uncomfortable. This is not like any other airbed I have ever used. It pumps up fast, it hardly loses air, it is comfortable, and we don't sink into the middle. It's actually better than our old regular bed. Until we get a new permanent bed, we have been using this for a month and it is simply great.

Reasonable price, high quality, and actually rivals or surpasses a number of regular beds.

I read that some "Emergency Blankets" flaked when used. I also read QuakeKare did not. I am disappointed that a bait and switch happened and am in hopes that this EverDixie Rescue Blanket is one of them that does not flake. I will be using it for a May camping trip, the average temperature at night is 45-50 degrees. The air in the blow-up mattress is only as warm or cold as the air around it. I am camping in a tent and do not have electricity to use an electric heater. I'll let you know how it works but think they should stop advertising one brand and then send another.

I was looking for the small classic to attach to my key chain when on Amazon there was an offer of a buy one get one free! I keep Swiss Army knives in my "go bag" with other emergency gear and clothing. These knives are just too handy and are at the right price not to stock for emergencies.

 "Wonderful knife" 2010-02-24

I have carried one of these knives for at least 30 years. I had gotten one for my son several years ago and he recently lost it. This is a Christmas gift replacement. He just called today, 02/23/2010 to tell me he just found the one that was lost. Now he has a spare. He also liked the Classic knife. Great combination.

swiss army knifes are always great stuff, not only for myself but also for gift. The price for two knifes are pretty good. I like them very much.

I bought this for my husband who had to throw his original one away at the airport when he forgot he had it in his pocket. The free mini knife is just like the one he paid $30 for at walmart!
